Once upon a time I was a silly joyful girl, young adult
even. I could laugh, have fun and I didn’t take myself so seriously. What is
sad is I don’t even know how or when I became so ubber serious. My poor Boo
didn’t get sung to very often (I have a terrible singing voice), I would hum to
him and of course I thought I was making it up to him by reading to him a lot.
But nothing makes up for all the silly things my crazy serious self was just
too uptight to do.
A little while back I read something that struck me… I read
that you shouldn’t be afraid to be silly with your children. Dance… sing… have
fun… just be silly!!! The day I read that I started singing to my kids. I don’t
know many songs but my two year old memorized the first song I sang to him,
after I sang it to him once. (It was Row Row Your Boat.) He sings it every day
and I sing it with him!
I also turn on music for us to dance to together and sing to.
We even let the baby join in! He loves it, and he loves it even more when I do
it with him! I didn’t know how much these little things mean to kids, but what
is more I didn’t know how much they would mean to me.
So if there is one thing I can tell you about the transition
from military to civilian life it would be, get over your serious side, forget
how busy you are for a few moments; and just have silly time with your kids
every day! Make time for it! It will make you both so much happier!
